50 Shades of Indecision + Valentines Day Inspirations

50 Shades of Grey came out today in movie theaters. I am on book two of the trilogy, and for those who haven’t read it: no, I am not a pervert and I don’t have a thing for books that are all about sexual fantasy. It actually is a love story and a psychologically interesting one at that.

Alright so here’s my struggle about this special day for 50 Shades: I can’t decide whether I want to see the movie or not because I don’t want the story I have come to like in the book to be ruined by a potentially crappy movie. I go back and forth with this conundrum every.single.time they come out with a movie based on a book I read and loved. It’s so risky because, unlike every other movie that comes out and presents us with a fresh story, this is a story I know (more than they will show in the movie) and already have an opinion about and possibly feel VERY strongly about that opinion and the context of the story.

I don’t know if this is the case with anyone else, but I have always found myself to be more emotional invested in books that I read than any movie I have ever seen. I KNEW I couldn’t bear to watch The Fault in Our Stars on the screen after reading the book because I was so effected by the end of the book (to the point where I balled at the end and thought about the story for days and days).

Oh, and I have to say this: I don’t love who they chose to play Christian Grey, and his character is such a HUGE part of the story! On the other hand, I love love LOVE who they chose to play Anastasia Steele. She is what makes me think I have to see the movie. Dakota Johnson is almost exactly the look of the character Ana that I had pictured in my mind: sexy without trying, brainy, kind of quiet, and yet strong minded. I would love to see her play this part and knock it out of the park.

Anyways, to celebrate this special day for 50 Shades fans and Valentines Day, here are some of my favorite romantic inspirations:

#WCW: Taylor Swift

I woke up this morning hating Katy Perry. Weird and random, I know. But it’s really a product of her super bowl half-time performance that’s been festering within me.

I always liked her music. I mean, none of her hits have changed my view of the world or anything, but I won’t change the station in the car if Last Friday Night comes on. The issue I have is with the image she portrays. She comes off as such a cartoon character in her performances and music videos (and basically everything she does), that she is impossible to take seriously as a woman. Like a real-life Jessica Rabbit. She is probably a smart woman, but you would never know that by watching her in the media and pop world. The doe-eyed, baby-doll, candy-licking, boob-busting, trying-way-too hard, sex-object stuff? It’s just not for me and I feel it sends us back to the 1950s in terms of women empowerment. Her super bowl performance was no exception, and it only perpetuated this Kay Per angst.  And what’s up with her ongoing feud with Taylor Swift? I could be wrong, but maybe she has a competitive streak with successful women. It’s not personal, really! I just don’t get the “dumb, sex object” facade and I REALLY don’t get competitiveness between women.

This is starting to sound like a rant, and I don’t want to go there, so I’ll get to the point: My #WCW for this week is Taylor Swift. She is successful, and surrounds herself with many other inspiring, successful women. I respect this 10 fold. It would be so easy for women to let their egos get the best of them and be competitive and jealous towards each other, but she does not seem intimidated or threatened by another woman’s success. She may even be inspired by it. She is also very bright, dresses in a way that is sexy, yet not overtly so, and moves to the beat of her own drum. I have not always been a Tay Tay die-hard/Swifty, but I have to say that I have noticed her a lot in the media lately and the way she caries herself, shows integrity, takes risks, values her fans and their undying loyalty to her, and realizes the importance of the women in her life really speaks to me. Not to mention the girl can dress…

Spring & Summer Inspiration for the Home

My last post was a collection of my current inspirations for my spring/summer wardrobe. But after we got nearly 17″ of snow this past weekend in Detroit, I have been in serious “nesting” mode, making our home extra cozy and cute. I have been inspired to update a few rooms in our apartment in the coming months. Keep scrolling for my favorite home inspirations and ideas for a fresh home this spring.

Organized Kitchen

Everyone knows spring is the time to clean the house top to bottom and get organized (although I am always cleaning my house and organized to a fault). This year though, I want to work on organization that is also pleasing to the eye and adds to a room’s decor. I love this basket above the fridge that can store items that don’t fit in a cabinet or be used as a serving tray, all while being decorative.

Corral the clutter on your fridge with a @homegoods wicker tray to hold your kitchen essentials.  #HomeGoodsHappy #DIY #Organize

Neutral & Romantic

Neutral colors don’t have to be boring. I love how this bedroom is simple, soft and romantic with different textures and materials to still keep it interesting. The beautiful woodwork doesn’t hurt either of course.

Simple Candle-lit Living Room

This is the room I want to be in when I am trying to relax at the end of a long day. The candles make it soothing and smelling pretty and who doesn’t love a shaggy rug and fur throws?? The lack of art work on the wall and simple, yet thoughtful and elegant decor makes it the perfect room to kick back in and watch some primetime TV.

Dusty Rose Walls

I’ve been tossing around the idea of painting our bathroom lately. I want it to be relaxing and spa-like, but not that obnoxious sky blue or moss green everyone seems to choose. I am thinking a dusty (manly) purple might be the way to go. The color in the picture below is gorgeous and not too girly (although I think for a tiny bathroom I might want to do a few shades lighter).

Dusty purple wall color, the new neutral

I am obsessed with gold. It turns up everywhere, from my wardrobe to my home decor. I especially love an antique, brassy gold color like the mirror below. My grandma recently handed down to me an old, full-length, gold mirror. I CAN’T WAIT to prop it up against the wall in our living area for some impact on my giant blank wall. The wall color in this bathroom would look amazing on my living room wall with my gold mirror. The colors complement each other so well.

I stumbled across this picture on pinterest and it immediately grabbed my attention, but I couldn’t really figure out why for some reason. I think it is the white vs dark contrast. I love the Dark wood of the dresser with the white of the roses and candles. And the metallics! I see a lot of them in this room and it gives me warm and fuzzies.

Standout View

At the moment our view is very…white, shall we say (a foot and a half of snow will do that). But in the spring it is a combination of lush green and sparkling blue from our lake and the trees that surround it. It’s pretty amazing and the first thing you see when you walk in the door (and visible from the kitchen, living, and dining areas). I love how the picture below kept everything in the room simple and a light neutral, to let the skyline stand out. Definitely going to keep this idea in mind when the vegetation is visible and growing back again.

Wardrobe Decor

These baskets. OMG I love them. Again, I love functional decor! I also LOVE the textures, blush colors, sequins, and patterns of the clothing peaking out in this room. I am not even entirely sure what is all in that closet, but I have a feeling it is my dream wardrobe!

Love the wardrobe and BASKETS!

Standout Plants

Who thought a plant could be the focus and standout piece of a room?? This ficus tree is gorgeous and MAKES the room.

Aztec Prints

Summer gets me jonesin for some print. I love the aztec prints in this bedroom. It feels so earthy and kind of like the room could be in a resort in mexico or somewhere exotic and warm.

Outdoor Space

There is nothing I love more than being outside with a drink on warm summer nights under twinkling lights. My balcony always gets more love when it gets warm out.

Jars as Candle Holders

Cheap, simple, romantic. Need I say more? They go with my rustic, vintage, romantic, glam feel I always have going in my apartment too.

Summer Colors

This purple and teal really catch my attention. Flowers in these colors would be such a beautiful pop of color in any room.

Awesome color combo with purple and blue vases- this would look great with a Peacock themed wedding!

Springtime Colors

Same as above. I have a love affair with pink right now, in any shade or tone.

We already know I love gold, but lace is such a nice touch for an added vintage, feminine, and romantic feel. Lace always makes me think of curtains in an old farm house or my mothers doilies growing up, so I love that sentimentality the fabric holds.

Spring/Summer Style Inspirations

Every year, this time of year two things happen: 1. I start fantasizing about moving somewhere closure to the equator and 2. To get my mind off of the subzero temps, I begin making my spring/summer style wish list to get my hopes up about the impending (?) warmth. This week we froze our asses off, so of course I started gathering inspirational photos to inspire my warm-weather wardrobe. Below are my faves.

2015 Fashion Resolutions

I can’t believe it’s 2015. Where is the time going? I feel like the years are whipping by and to be honest it freaks me out, but this feeling is also teaching me that I need to have as much fun as possible and be the best I can be everyday, because time is so fleeting. Hey, I think I just came up with my New Year’s Resolution!

Anyways, I thought it would be fun to do a little Fashion New Year’s Resolution. Why not? Resolutions are usually about bettering ourselves, so why not try to better the way we present ourselves to the world this year?

Here are a few of my personal Fashion New Year’s Resolutions.

1. Make More Thoughtful Purchases. Less is more, and quality over quantity are good words to live by. I don’t know one girl that isn’t guilty of stumbling over an amazing sale and over-stocking with things that aren’t entirely necessary. Nothing makes me more anxious than an overstuffed closet full of cheap crap. I still need to work on not making impulse purchases myself, and I want to do that by sticking to a list of what I need for each season and not getting lured in by emails that say “50% off everything”.

Motivating. Hopefully, this one will come to mind when I open the storage closet and gasp at the floor to ceiling shelves full of totes!

2. Be More Creative. I started paying back my student loans this month, which means it’s time to cut back on other purchases in order to get that very expensive education paid for as soon as possible. I envy girls who can take items they have in their closet and use their creativity to make them as versatile as possible.

3. Focus on Fit. I notice a lot of the time while I’m trolling Pinterest that I’ll see a girl in a fairly plain outfit and think “how does she look so immaculate in just jeans and a tee with ballet flats?” I see this with Olivia Palermo allllllll the time: her jeans hug her legs perfectly and are hemmed to just the right length, her tops hit at the perfect spot on the hips, and her jackets look like they were made for her. Tailoring tends to make the most inexpensive pieces look more expensive, and even more importantly, flatter the body better. I am guilty of not wanting to take the time to go to the tailor, being afraid they will ruin a piece I love so much, wanting to wear the thing right now, or not buying something I love because the fit isn’t perfect. But I realize when I look at others that it is necessary and something I need to do more.

4. Pay More Attention to Details. This year I realized the magic of accessories and the power they have over an outfit. This year, I am going to continue to pay attention to the things that make an outfit special and personal. Layering dainty rings, gold bracelets, and statement necklaces always gives a look pizazz. Also under details I want to address the importance of good hair and makeup. I notice that if the hair is ratted and the makeup is caked on, I don’t appreciate, or even notice, the great dress that a girl might be wearing. This is especially true when going for a classic, simple look. The hair, skin, and even nails, are everything.

#WCW: Kristin Cavallari

I have been following KCav’s style since her bitch days on the Hills and always loved her classic, sexy style. I love a girl who has amazing legs and shows them off well, and she does it with skinnies, minis, and rompers. Because she is a Chicagoan like myself, I love following her winter style. OMG I almost forgot about the SHOES! Her shoe line. It’s to die. I am asking for a pair of her booties for Christmas 😉

Give Thanks for Style

Ok, there are more important things to give thanks for. But I couldn’t help myself with the play on words. There are many routes when choosing a look for thanksgiving day. I mostly like to dress-down this day and save my dressier looks for Christmas and Thanksgiving, but to each their own. Below are a few options for Thanksgiving Day attire, depending on the environment. While we are on the topic of giving thanks, here is a short list of what I am thankful for this year:

  • My Health
  • Family and friends and their health
  • My amazing boyfriend and moving into our first home together this year
  • My career opportunities
  • Receiving my degree from Michigan State last spring
  • The creative ventures and opportunities I have had this year
  • My strength and confidence in a time of change and transition

Now onto the fashion…

This is the perfect look for the holidays that doesn’t scream “festive holiday wear”. No need to pair tights with this dress. The house will be warm enough with every burner and stove on cooking up the deliciousness and the house packed with hot bodies.

These jogger trousers are comfy to lounge in after the big meal, yet dressy and family-photo worthy (I need these for work!!!). I love how the leopard booties, fur bag, and jewels add a personal touch to this simple foundation of an outfit.

Bauble Bar Necklace, Aldo Bag, Whistles Blouse, Miss Selfridge Ring, Bamboo Bootie, Topshop Pants

This Zara sweater is my newest addition to my winter wardrobe and I’m slightly obsessed. I love the texture of the Mohair and the perfect caramel color. With a legging jean and patent pump it’s the perfect look for a casual holiday gathering.

Lori’s Cuff, Vince Camuto Bag, Prima Donna Necklace, Zara Sweater, Joe’s Jeans, Chinese Laundry Pumps

Ultimate Comfort

For the small Thanksgiving gathering and ultimate comfort level, this is the perfect outfit that is just as cozy as your PJ’s, but much more chic. Moody nails are the easiest accessory and a must for any winter outfit in my opinion. And of course, loafers are the most obvious shoe of choice for comfort.
