A Trend Comeback Story

One item that is making a comeback, that I had actually completely forgot that I used to be coocoo for cocoa puffs for, is the jelly sandal! Like a true 90’s kid, I LOVED my jelliessss. They reminded me of candy with their bubblegum pink hue and shiny texture and hellooooo WATERPROOF! “Perfect for the beach, Six Flags, and splashing in puddles” said my 7 year-old self back in 1999. And as long as you were wearing the correct size, they were pretty comfortable! I realize this is a tricky trend to welcome back. They aren’t particularly flattering for the foot and don’t represent anything near “elegance” or “sophistication” (which I like to strive for). But I’m a sucker for anything nostalgic, so here we are [They give me warm and fuzzies, what can I say…]. I think these shoes look best with a very classic, modern outfit, as to not look like you entered 2015 via a time capsule from 1998. A striped tee with super skinny jeans and a sophisticated handbag make these shoes work best. I mean, I wouldn’t turn up my nose to a funkier outfit either, it’s just not what makes me tick. But whatever works for your style and whatever makes you happy, DO IT 🙂

There are many styles that are either an exact replica of the 1990’s footwear or are purely inspired by them. You don’t have to go with the chunky heeled, strappy style in order to be apart of the trend and get that 90’s influence. I went with a metallic flip flop version (which you will see below). So have fun with it, make it your own, and do a little searching because the options are endless when it comes to pvc footwear.

Below is a little Jelly sandal inspo followed by a few links to buy my favorite styles.

11 Ways to Wear a White Moto Jacket This Spring and Summer

H&M Biker Jacket $49.95

HM.com

I love my black leather Guess jacket. It’s the bomb. I feel so downtown cool when I wear it, but it has a classic enough vibe to wear to work in the spring and fall sans winter coat. But this year, I was thinking I wanted to add another biker jacket to my wardrobe arsenal in a less offensive color and material for the spring and summer months. I noticed this jacket at H&M last weekend and I thought it might be the perfect spring jacket. So I went home, pried open my trusty laptop and went to work on Polyvore. I was surprised to see how many different looks I could top off with this jacket and I am sure there are many, many more. Suffice to say, I bought it. Below are the many ways I can’t wait to wear this H&M piece.

Classic

All of these items are classic, and sure to already have a place in anyone’s closet.

Sunset Dinner Date

This is a great look for a dinner date on an outdoor patio. The blue and white are a bright and playful combination. The straw clutch and brown leather sandals add a laid back, beachy touch.

A Little Nautical

This outfit encompasses all my favorite things: the H&M jacket, stripes, a tiny dress, rose gold, a wedge, and a beach-inspired necklace. It is pure p-e-r-f-e-c-t-i-o-n.

Cool in Leather, Shades, and Metallic

Casual + classic with a maxi

I am eager to wear my maxi dresses before it’s officially warm out, so I love the idea of throwing a biker jacket over-top and adding closed-toe shoes for cool spring days.

Most probably know the name Rebecca Minkoff by her adorable, classic zippered and tassled crossbody bag. Lately, I have took notice to her clothing and other accessories as well. Below are a few of my favorites of the past and present.

Spring Polyvore Picks

Polyvore is my life. My favorite component of fashion is styling and Polyvore indulges every amateur stylists’ dreams. I think we are all guilty of dreaming up the perfect sunny day looks when it is still below 50 degrees outside…right? Below are a few of my absolute favorite looks I have put together in lieu of the warmer and sunnier weather to come.

A Little Bit Boho

I just bought this cami. So adorable!! Even more adorable is it paired with this boho sweater. This outfit really encompasses the look I am going for this season: boho meets feminine with a touch of sex appeal. It’s hot, yet effortless.

Floral on Fleek

First time using that word in a sentence. Did I do it right? I am drooling over this dress right now. And clearly these shoes as well because they keep popping up in every one of my polyvore sets! Scroll down to see. I love a long sleeve mini and the lace and floral touch on this one is just beyond (Forever 21 is really stepping up it’s game lately, no?!). I love how the fuschia ring and mint clutch bring out the springy colors of the dress.

PerSUEDE me

These suede shorts are so chic! They look comfy and really go along with the 70’s vibe that is very apparent in the fashion world at the moment. I think they deserve to be center attention with the white tank, neutral bag, and minimal accessories. But of course I have to add in a little bling with the shoes.

Sexy + Simple

The ruching on this dress is what makes it stand out for me. It looks very flattering and simple, yet interesting. This dress has ENDLESS possibilities, but I love it with a white bag, nude sandals, and long gold earrings for a warm springtime date.

Casual Cuteness

I’m all about my skinny jeans. I live in them year round, but for spring I am always psyched to finally get my feet out of boots and into some adorable, comfy flats. I have never had a colorful pair and I think I need these! They are an outfit maker.

What’s Old is New Again

I got this dress many moons ago when I worked at Body Central (before the clothing became uber-slutty and they went out of business. *tear*) but I still love it! The quality is shockingly decent for the price I paid and I just LOVE the print. It’s so romantic! I am looking forward to continuing to wear it this year, but I would love to find a few new accessories to style it with. These shoes are a must have to go from dates to weddings and of course this braided suede clutch is so in. A must-have!

Coral to the Max(i)

I mentioned in this post that I am getting into maxi dresses lately. I didn’t realize how flattering they are. I love this super-affordable coral number. I would let it shine with glam sunnies and a simple brown leather tote and shoes.

Fringe Benefits

This is the ultimate travel look. maxi cardigans are catching my eye this season and this one is perfect to pair with jeans and a tank or a maxi dress and wedges! And who doesn’t love a pair of espadrilles?? These look tall enough to give me some height and slim my legs, but comfy enough to run around town or travel in.

A Solid Platform

Last but not least: Running errands in style. This J Crew tee is everything. This outfit is really simple and effortless and that’s what I love about. It’s un-fussy and it speaks for itself, so let me talk about these shoes for a little since this is the millionth time you are seeing them. I mean, I probably don’t even have to mention how versatile they are at this point, right? from super casual with jeans a tee, to a blouse for a date, to a sexy little dress, to under a maxi, these shoes can do it all. The nude color goes with everything and a sturdy platform is so easy to walk in. Another must-have for spring/summer.

Recycled Fashion

I LOVE a good versatile piece. They make my heart race. Who doesn’t love to get more bang for their buck? It is one of my fashion obsessions: re-purposing old items to make them new again.

What bugs me on a regular basis about blogs and celebrity fashion is, a lot of the time, they seem to never wear an item more than once OR continue to wear a certain item the same way over and over again. We don’t all have the back accounts of a real housewife (or the closet size!) and who wants to wear one piece and say goodbye forever anyways? I don’t like goodbyes. They make me sad. I like my clothes! That’s why I bought them…and I want to wear them again and again and again!

So, suffice to say, I love how Olivia Palermo (one of my style icons) reusing so many pieces in her wardrobe! This girl is loaded, but she clearly loves her aquazzara shoes so why wear anything else? The best part: you can’t even tell she is rewearing an item for the 100th time because the other pieces she pairs the recycled item with are a completely new style than the last time she wore it. From her hair and makeup to her jewels, she tricked you into thinking the whole outfit was brand new. GENIUS. Recently, I noticed how many times she has worn this Gerard Darel 24 Hour Woodstock Rafia Bag. And why wouldn’t she wear it over and over?! It’s s cute!! I love the amount of different scenarios and looks she managed to pull off with this bag. Check out the master at work…

Spring Style Inspiration

Here are just a few photos and elements that are inspiring me style-wise this spring. Some are old, some are recycled die-hards from years past.

Vinage-y Florals

I love a good floral. This year I am digging more vintage-y looking florals with dusty mint, mossy green, and light cream.

Love the dress & belt. And I'm sure when I get it I'll wear it...as I seductively bite a flower.

SLBD AKA Sexy Little Button Down

Yes, I just made that acronym up myself. I’m clever, I know. A true Gemini. But seriously, There’s nothing I love more that a soft, BF style button down. The versatility this piece provides makes me giddy just thinking about it. tuck it into skirt, tie it over this maxi, throw it on with jeans and flats, roll up the sleeves and leave two-too many buttons undone, wear it as a light jacket with an embroidered camisole like this one, I am going to stop now because I’m getting too excited…I am also digging a little gingham gone sexy! This print can look a little tablecloth, but a touch of sexiness like a short short or deep-v should do the trick.

Crochet

On one hand it reminds me of a grandmother’s handmade blanket, on the other hand it adds interest and texture to a look. Either way, it’s caught my eye. I would love a crochet bikini. It’s a fine line between grandma and sexy, but I’m determined to try it out beach-side this year. I’m thinking a tote is a great way to dip my toe in the crochet water. I am in LOVE with Olivia Palermo’s texture-rific bag. I’d love a bigger one to go from plane to sigh-seeing to beach on vaca.

Maxi Dresses

I  know these have been in the rotation for years for many, but I really haven’t been psyched about them until this year. I’m a slow trend bloomer at times. I think my subconscious is just looking out to see what has staying power before jumping in full force. Actually, now that I think about it, I really am a look-before-I-jump kind of gal. Anyways. 50 Shades of Indecision + Valentines Day Inspirations

50 Shades of Grey came out today in movie theaters. I am on book two of the trilogy, and for those who haven’t read it: no, I am not a pervert and I don’t have a thing for books that are all about sexual fantasy. It actually is a love story and a psychologically interesting one at that.

Alright so here’s my struggle about this special day for 50 Shades: I can’t decide whether I want to see the movie or not because I don’t want the story I have come to like in the book to be ruined by a potentially crappy movie. I go back and forth with this conundrum every.single.time they come out with a movie based on a book I read and loved. It’s so risky because, unlike every other movie that comes out and presents us with a fresh story, this is a story I know (more than they will show in the movie) and already have an opinion about and possibly feel VERY strongly about that opinion and the context of the story.

I don’t know if this is the case with anyone else, but I have always found myself to be more emotional invested in books that I read than any movie I have ever seen. I KNEW I couldn’t bear to watch The Fault in Our Stars on the screen after reading the book because I was so effected by the end of the book (to the point where I balled at the end and thought about the story for days and days).

Oh, and I have to say this: I don’t love who they chose to play Christian Grey, and his character is such a HUGE part of the story! On the other hand, I love love LOVE who they chose to play Anastasia Steele. She is what makes me think I have to see the movie. Dakota Johnson is almost exactly the look of the character Ana that I had pictured in my mind: sexy without trying, brainy, kind of quiet, and yet strong minded. I would love to see her play this part and knock it out of the park.

Anyways, to celebrate this special day for 50 Shades fans and Valentines Day, here are some of my favorite romantic inspirations:

#WCW: Taylor Swift

I woke up this morning hating Katy Perry. Weird and random, I know. But it’s really a product of her super bowl half-time performance that’s been festering within me.

I always liked her music. I mean, none of her hits have changed my view of the world or anything, but I won’t change the station in the car if Last Friday Night comes on. The issue I have is with the image she portrays. She comes off as such a cartoon character in her performances and music videos (and basically everything she does), that she is impossible to take seriously as a woman. Like a real-life Jessica Rabbit. She is probably a smart woman, but you would never know that by watching her in the media and pop world. The doe-eyed, baby-doll, candy-licking, boob-busting, trying-way-too hard, sex-object stuff? It’s just not for me and I feel it sends us back to the 1950s in terms of women empowerment. Her super bowl performance was no exception, and it only perpetuated this Kay Per angst.  And what’s up with her ongoing feud with Taylor Swift? I could be wrong, but maybe she has a competitive streak with successful women. It’s not personal, really! I just don’t get the “dumb, sex object” facade and I REALLY don’t get competitiveness between women.

This is starting to sound like a rant, and I don’t want to go there, so I’ll get to the point: My #WCW for this week is Taylor Swift. She is successful, and surrounds herself with many other inspiring, successful women. I respect this 10 fold. It would be so easy for women to let their egos get the best of them and be competitive and jealous towards each other, but she does not seem intimidated or threatened by another woman’s success. She may even be inspired by it. She is also very bright, dresses in a way that is sexy, yet not overtly so, and moves to the beat of her own drum. I have not always been a Tay Tay die-hard/Swifty, but I have to say that I have noticed her a lot in the media lately and the way she caries herself, shows integrity, takes risks, values her fans and their undying loyalty to her, and realizes the importance of the women in her life really speaks to me. Not to mention the girl can dress…

Spring & Summer Inspiration for the Home

My last post was a collection of my current inspirations for my spring/summer wardrobe. But after we got nearly 17″ of snow this past weekend in Detroit, I have been in serious “nesting” mode, making our home extra cozy and cute. I have been inspired to update a few rooms in our apartment in the coming months. Keep scrolling for my favorite home inspirations and ideas for a fresh home this spring.

Organized Kitchen

Everyone knows spring is the time to clean the house top to bottom and get organized (although I am always cleaning my house and organized to a fault). This year though, I want to work on organization that is also pleasing to the eye and adds to a room’s decor. I love this basket above the fridge that can store items that don’t fit in a cabinet or be used as a serving tray, all while being decorative.

Corral the clutter on your fridge with a @homegoods wicker tray to hold your kitchen essentials.  #HomeGoodsHappy #DIY #Organize

Neutral & Romantic

Neutral colors don’t have to be boring. I love how this bedroom is simple, soft and romantic with different textures and materials to still keep it interesting. The beautiful woodwork doesn’t hurt either of course.

...

Simple Candle-lit Living Room

This is the room I want to be in when I am trying to relax at the end of a long day. The candles make it soothing and smelling pretty and who doesn’t love a shaggy rug and fur throws?? The lack of art work on the wall and simple, yet thoughtful and elegant decor makes it the perfect room to kick back in and watch some primetime TV.

Dusty Rose Walls

I’ve been tossing around the idea of painting our bathroom lately. I want it to be relaxing and spa-like, but not that obnoxious sky blue or moss green everyone seems to choose. I am thinking a dusty (manly) purple might be the way to go. The color in the picture below is gorgeous and not too girly (although I think for a tiny bathroom I might want to do a few shades lighter).

Dusty purple wall color, the new neutral

Gold

I am obsessed with gold. It turns up everywhere, from my wardrobe to my home decor. I especially love an antique, brassy gold color like the mirror below. My grandma recently handed down to me an old, full-length, gold mirror. I CAN’T WAIT to prop it up against the wall in our living area for some impact on my giant blank wall. The wall color in this bathroom would look amazing on my living room wall with my gold mirror. The colors complement each other so well.

White&Dark

I stumbled across this picture on pinterest and it immediately grabbed my attention, but I couldn’t really figure out why for some reason. I think it is the white vs dark contrast. I love the Dark wood of the dresser with the white of the roses and candles. And the metallics! I see a lot of them in this room and it gives me warm and fuzzies.

Standout View

At the moment our view is very…white, shall we say (a foot and a half of snow will do that). But in the spring it is a combination of lush green and sparkling blue from our lake and the trees that surround it. It’s pretty amazing and the first thing you see when you walk in the door (and visible from the kitchen, living, and dining areas). I love how the picture below kept everything in the room simple and a light neutral, to let the skyline stand out. Definitely going to keep this idea in mind when the vegetation is visible and growing back again.

Wardrobe Decor

These baskets. OMG I love them. Again, I love functional decor! I also LOVE the textures, blush colors, sequins, and patterns of the clothing peaking out in this room. I am not even entirely sure what is all in that closet, but I have a feeling it is my dream wardrobe!

Love the wardrobe and BASKETS!

Standout Plants

Who thought a plant could be the focus and standout piece of a room?? This ficus tree is gorgeous and MAKES the room.

Aztec Prints

Summer gets me jonesin for some print. I love the aztec prints in this bedroom. It feels so earthy and kind of like the room could be in a resort in mexico or somewhere exotic and warm.

Outdoor Space

There is nothing I love more than being outside with a drink on warm summer nights under twinkling lights. My balcony always gets more love when it gets warm out.

Jars as Candle Holders

Cheap, simple, romantic. Need I say more? They go with my rustic, vintage, romantic, glam feel I always have going in my apartment too.

Summer Colors

This purple and teal really catch my attention. Flowers in these colors would be such a beautiful pop of color in any room.

Awesome color combo with purple and blue vases- this would look great with a Peacock themed wedding!

Springtime Colors

Same as above. I have a love affair with pink right now, in any shade or tone.

Lace&Gold

We already know I love gold, but lace is such a nice touch for an added vintage, feminine, and romantic feel. Lace always makes me think of curtains in an old farm house or my mothers doilies growing up, so I love that sentimentality the fabric holds.
